Southwest Lousiana Study
(April 2007)
Temple-Inland’s fee timberland in southwest Louisiana is located in one of the
most productive timber growing regions in the southern United States. Twenty-five facilities
procure wood fiber in from this wood basket; consuming a total of 12.7 million tons of raw
material. Approximately 6.0 million tons of pine longwood, 4.4 million tons of logs and 2.3
million tons of hardwood are sourced annually from this wood basin.
Most mills in this wood basin participate regularly in direct purchase
transactions. After the Temple land sale, only Weyerhaeuser and Roy O’ Martin will continue to
operate under the integrated model, sourcing half of their raw material from fee
timberland. Most mills without fee land in the wood basin rely on supply agreements with
several large landowners to secure raw material.
